How do you replace a belt on an MTD Snow thrower?

There are Two, sometimes THREE Belts on an MTD Snow Blower. They are NOT Easy To Change unless your experienced.. Belts cost around 12.00 EACH, and can takes a few hours to change.. Sometimes it is NOT the Belt, but an Adjustment in the Cable or a spring)

This is for the drive belt, not the auger belt

Check drive belt every 50 hours of operation for wear and tear.

Drain the gasoline from the snow thrower, or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap. Remove the plastic belt cover on the front of the engine by removing the two self-tapping screws. * Tip the snow thrower up and forward, so that it rests on the housing. • Remove six self-tapping screws from frame cover underneath the snow thrower.

• Pull the idler pulley away from the drive belt and remove the belt from the engine pulley. You will find the idler pulley in front of the engine and under the belt cover that you removed earlier. See

Figure 31.

• Working from the underside of the frame, slip belt between the friction wheel and the friction wheel disc. See Figure 34. You may have to twist the belt flat in order to slide it through the clearance between the friction wheel and the friction wheel disc. Remove the belt.

• Install new belt. Reassemble following the instructions in reverse order.

This is a pretty straight forward effort, for any most non-comitose DIY'er.

I've owned an MTD Blower,for about 12 years. the toughest belt change is the double auger drive belts. Springs need to be removed. the right wheel must be removed, when facing the open bottom, and the friction wheel assembly must be removed to allow access to the large auger drive pulleys. One must remember to not place the bottom belt onto the engine pulley until the top belt has been installed. It's pretty obvious, when you look at it and/or make the mistake one time.

These instructions are for a MTD 31A-32AD706 2-stage snow thrower, and may vary, depending on the model of your MTD snow thrower. Follow the cable from the auger control handle to a metal bracket on the [left] side of the snow thrower. There are 2 bolts that need to be loosened (removal is not necessary) which will allow the bracket to slide forward and backward. To add tension, slide the slide the bracket forward, to the front of the snow thrower and tighten the bolts when you achieve the desired tension.
