Remove the cap with wires and push them to the side. Pay close attnetion to the direction the rotor is pointing to and scribe a mark onto a nearby engine part; your new distributor needs this reference point. Unbolt old distributor and remove wires. Install new distributor, and as you do, start feeding the shaft gear so that the rotor ends up pointing to your earlier reference point. In most cases the distributor will not go down all the way because the oil pump drive is not engaged, however, apply a small amount of downward pressure to the distributor and have someone bump the key and it will drop in place. Reattach the cap and wires. Done. I hope this helps you.

if the shaft is loose in the distributor, you either need to rebuild or replace distributor.if distributor itself is loose there is a bolt at the base of the distributor that holds it in place
the module is in the distributor the module is in the distributor. you will have to remove the cap and rotor. it should be held on by 2 screws. good luck
