To replace the thermostat on a 1988 535i, first locate the top radiator hose and remove the end connected to the motor. Take out the old thermostat and use gasket cleaner to remove the old gasket. Then replace the gasket and thermostat exactly as it was when it came out. Tighten up the radiator hose over the thermostat.
If the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking the only fix is to replace it with a new one.
To replace the thermostat find the coolant elbow, it will be a rounded "L" shape towards the front of the vehicle. this will have two bolts attaching it to the block. Remove these two bolts and carefully pry off the elbow. Note how the thermostat sits in the elbow. scrape any excess gasket and be sure not to gouge the metal surface while doing so. install new gasket and thermostat, install elbow and two bolts and tighten (make sure not to over tighten).add coolant as needed to reservoir and run with radiator cap off for 10 - 15 minutes. shut the vehicle off and re-install cap.
just remove the 3 bolts on top of the valve cover and lift it out,and theres the gasket.
