Just did this yesterday. It is quite a chore. Be sure to obtain the replacement rubber gasket / O ring before starting the dissassembly.
Remove the intake cover (it says Thunderbird V8) by gently pulling the push in pins out. They may break but replacements are available at your local hard ware store.
Loosen the clamps around the air intake tube where it joins to the engine and where it joins to the air filter housing. Unplug the two electrical connections on the front of the air tube. Remove air intake tubing.
Remove upper radiator hose by compressing the clamp. This is a very tight area requiring some work to get a pair of vise grips on the clamp. Don't despair.
Remove the three screws that hold the housing in place. Be gentle this is made of plastic.
Remove the thermostat and be sure to notice how it is in the housing. It must be in this position or the housing will not fit or worse yet could break when you tighten the nuts during reassembly.
Reverse process to reassemble.
While you have this all apart is a good time to replace radiator hoses and the serpentine belt.

Follow the top radiator hose back to the engine. This is where the thermostat is. Remove the 2 bolts and there it is.
The thermostat, in your 2003 Ford Escape, by removing the water hose and the 3 bolts from the thermostat housing. The thermostat will easily come out. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
More then likely you need to replace the Thermostat.

Follow the top Radiator Hose from the Radiator to the engine and you'll see a housing remove the bolts from the housing and there is your thermostat (Note the way it came out and replace it with a new one) make sure you know which way to put it back in
