I did a 95 Pathfinder but I believe an 88 is very similar. The compression rod has threads on one end that connects to the frame, bushings are located on both sides of this frame connection, the other end is bolted to your wheels lower control arm. The part is vital, do not attempt to drive your vehicle without it, trust me. You may drive it slowly to move the vehicle but don't go over about 20 MPH. Remove the bolt holding on the washer and bushing, then remove the 2 bolts/nuts holding to the lower wheel. Remove the washers and bushings, note the location for reinstallation. Get your replacement part from the dealer. Tell them you need the complete kit. Install the washer and bushing - the washer and bushing must be installed in the correct direction, washer is beveled and the ribbed side faces the frame, the flat part of the bushing rests in the cup on the frame, the replacment kits have a sleeve that is inserted over the threads and under the inside of the bushings. Slide the threaded end, with washer, bushing, and sleeve into the frame, insert the bushing and washer on the other side of the frame connection and connect the bolt with the flat end facing the washer. Tighten until the 2 frame holes are lined up, use a screwdriver to verify the holes are lined up. You may need to jack up the vehicle to raise the bar so it is flat with the control arm to insert bolts and nuts. Don't fully tighten until the jack has been lowered. Tools needed 1/2 socket breaker wrench, extra length makes removing bolts easier, I used my 6 D cell mag lite for this purpose, 1/2 socket wrench, 3/4 socket, 22mm open end wrench, 24mm open end wrench, screwdriver for lining up holes. 22 mm and 24 mm sockets might help also. As repairs go this is pretty uncomplicated, I was able to do it without removing the tire but removing the tire would probably make it easier, giving more room for wrenching. Make sure the 2 bolts are nice and tight, do not over tighten the bolt on the threaded end of the rod, if the other 2 bolts are straight no further tightening is required. Your done, go for a test ride.
