There is a crankshaft position sensor. It is located Under the hood, center, lower engine area, front side of engine, passenger side of crankshaft pulley, mounted in engine block
firing order: 1-2-3-4-5-6 with clockwise distributor rotation on the 3.1 v6 ohv engine

Crank sensors are always located on the camshafts. The 1989 Pontiac Sunbird crank sensor is located on the head of the engine towards to end of the camshaft.
I have a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird with 2.0 four cylinder in it, just found the crank sensor on it, to replace it. It is located on the FRONT side of the engine, below exhaust manifold and just above the A/C compressor. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE ELSE!
3.1L dont have a crank sensor
The crankshaft sensor is on the side of the engine behind the alternator. It is mounted close to the oil filter,
It happened to me. I spun two crank bearing. I had to tear the engine apart and replace the crank and the bearings. Get somebody to check the outer tie rods. I had a car that did that. The noise will be less if you change lanes.

The 1995 Pontiac Grand Am 3.1 liter engine crank shaft sensor is located inside of the rear engine cover. You will need to remove the rear engine cover in order to access the crankshaft sensor.
