check to see if the outer or inner boots are torn and grease is coming out. when they start to fail the axle makes a clicking noise during turning.
The CV joints on a 1996 Ford Aerostar can be replaced by removing the nuts and bolts on the tires. Next, cotter pins, lower ball joints, and the outer joint will need to be removed. Then a pry bar can be placed between the transmission and the inner joint, which will make it easy to pull out.
You'll probably have to install a remanufactured steering rack unit. I'm not aware the boots are available as a separate part any more.

In the engine compartment, there is a joint in the cable that requires a 12mm and 19mm open ended spanner to undo. Then pull out the whole cable, grease, wipe off excess, then gently push the cable back. Do up the screw and gently tighten with the 12mm and 19mm spanners.
