know what you mean. Mine was real loose and sloppy. If you check 4wd or quadratrac. They have all the parts you need. There should be plastic bushings where the attachment rod slides through on the transfer case. Also the pins that hold the shift linkage will ware out. or some people replace tem with screws. Also their should be a plastic tip on the end of the shift rod that takes up the slack where it slides through at the shift rails. If you replace all these pieces you will see a big improvement. Or you could swapp in a twin stick shiffter.

The 1989 Toyota Camry shifter linkage cables have adjustment swivel nuts on each end of the cable. Turning the swivel nuts will lengthen or shorten the shifter linkage cable.

They don't use linkage, they use a cable. The cable goes between the shift lever mechanism to the transmission.

Depending on your engine in the 2.4 the cable is behind the filler cap for automatic transmittion fluid. then it goes all the ay down the firewall and into the shifter inside the car need to lift up the leather cover under the shifter and the hand brake as well and the you will see the bublle like conector. disengage both and put the replacement cable .
The transmission uses a cable for linkage. If the car has consol shift the cable runs from the shifter to the transaxle. If it is a column shift the cable runs from a lever on the column to the transaxle.
There are two cables. One is the Throttle valve (TV) cable and that should go from the throttle linkage to the transmission. It will pop off the throttle arm and there is one bolt holding the cable housing to the transmission. take it out the bolt and unhook the linkage and replace the cable making sure to snap it back on at the throttle arm. The other cable is the for shifting and it should attach to a lever arm on the side of your transmission and go to the shifter linkage. If you are under the car and have someone shift with the car off you will see the the arm moving disconnect it from both ends of the cable and replace.
Loosen the shifter cable not on each end of the shifter cable. The shifter cable will come off. Reverse the process to install the new shifter cable.

The Volvo 960 does not use a cable type shifter, it uses a rod style shifter linkage. It is a rod from the shifter and one from the transmission connected by a long rod. There is a bushing at each pivot point.
