The 1989 Toyota Camry shifter linkage cables have adjustment swivel nuts on each end of the cable. Turning the swivel nuts will lengthen or shorten the shifter linkage cable.
Not really describing answer , but i would assume you shifter cables have broken
shift linkage is worn out Reply, Not necessarily. Remove the console ring around the shifter then the shifter boot. There are two cables that run from the shifter to the transmission which pass through a plastic bulkhead. On the rearward side of the bulkhead are clips which hold the cables in place. Chances are the clip on the right(passenger side) cable is missing.
i just had that same problem and all i needed to do was replace one of the shifter cables. $50 used and 20 min to install i just had that same problem and all i needed to do was replace one of the shifter cables. $50 used and 20 min to install
Yes
Check to make sure that the shift linkage is adjusted properly. If not, the linkage may not be able to move the gears inside the transmission enough to properly engage. I have a Daytona that has a procedure to lock the transmission in a known position, the shift cables are loosened at the shifter, and two rods are placed in the shifter to lock it in a corresponding known position. Then the cables connecting the two are tightened down, the 'locks' are removed, and everything is good to go. Check to see if the linkage on the transmission or in the gear shifter inside the car is bent. Check to see if something is interfering with the shift linkage. Could be a hose or something in the way. You may have to open the transmission if the remedies above didn't fix it. Something may be bent inside the transmission preventing the gears from engaging properly.
Yes the transmission will fit. But when converting over you will need a clutch pedal, brake pedal, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, clutch fluid reservoir as well as the lines to route the fluid. You will also need the shifter cables as well as the shifter itself. Its not an easy task.
No, but I have seen broken shifter cables Dan the tranny man
the shifter is controlled by 2 cables on the newer cars, there is no manual parts like on the older vehicles.
Changing transmission cables on a 2006 Pontiac vibe
i have two cables on my 2001 0utback i had to replace the engine now dont know to adjust the two cables need help.
i actually bought my GA with this problem with intentions of fixing it which i did. The proble is as follows: you're shift linkage is 2 cables, 1 to control forward action and 1 to control side to side on the shifter. Pontiac didn't do a good job making bellows to cover the the rods at the ends of the shifter cables. Therefore dirt a water get in the cable and ceases the motion of the cable. Wwhen i went to the dealer each cable is around $80. Ilive in Pa by the world class junk yard harrys u pull it and ended up get both cables and a shifter for $15.
replace the shifter cables and shifter shaft itself the lock could be broke or one of the cables
