You need to take the door panel off first. To do this you will need to follow these instructions.

REMOVAL OF DOOR PANEL

1. Remove the reflector on the rear side of the door. This can be done with a flat head screwdriver. Pry on the top and bottom of the reflector and it will pop out. There is a 10mm bolt that needs to be removed.

2. Using a skinny flat head or awl slide it on the FRONT EDGE of the window, door, mirror control panel on the armrest. There is a clip that need to be depressed and is commonly missed by most people. Push the screwdriver in the small crevice at the front part of the assembly. Push it down about an inch and gently pry against the panel. It will pop up easily. There are 2 10mm bolts that need to be removed.

3. Disconnect the switches

4. Remove the torx (star) head screw and panel right by the door handle.

5. Remove the torx (star) head screw at the rear of the panel by the reflector you removed earlier.

6. Using a large screwdriver or a wide tool go along the edge of the door panel and pop out the retainers.

7. Once the 3 bolts and the clips have been popped out, roll the window down. Gently pull the panel out and up. Make sure that the L shaped plastic molding on the top of the panel is releasing from it's groove. If not gently pry apart the slot it sits in.

8. Once the panel is free. You will need to disconnect the plug to the headlight switch.

9. Now, there are 2fixed bolts holding the mirror in.

10. Loosen the nuts and remove them.

11. Remove the mirror.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, just send me a message.

How do you replace the outside driver's side mirror on a 1997 Saab 900?

I just did this myself and it was easy, didn't even have to remove the door panel. I am not a mechanic and I did it in 15 minutes. This procedure also works with passenger side mirror. 1. Remove triangle shape cover inside the door by the mirror. I did it by hand. 2. Remove any foam to expose 3 bolts. You will need a hex tool to remove bolts 3. Disconnect electrical connector prior to removal 4. Installation of mirror is just the reverse. Here is a diagram of the job: http://www.justanswer.com/car/31a1g-replace-passenger-side-mirror-97-saab-se.html
