in a 2005 800 the front outer is replaced by removing axle nut. brake caliper, rotor and boot. rest half shaft on jack stand. place large pipe wrench or adjustable wrench over shaft behind cv joint. strike wrench with a 2.5 pound hammer. cv joint can be easily disassembled and cleaned. use screwdriver handle to tap bearing cage verticle. remove bearings one at a time. rotating cage after each one. clean, rinstall and grease.

It is very labor intensive to replace the boot vs an axle which is a do-it-yourself job. In my shop we used to replace boots but because of high incident of joint failure customers were understandably upset. The boot has a life and so does the joint; once the boot tears ,the joint is not far behind. Why do the job twice?
