How do you replace the brake light in a 1998 jaguar xj8?
Remove rear light unit cover in trunk.
Turn bulb holder fastener 90 degrees counter clockwise and remove.
Replace faulty bulb.

If it's the brake light in the boot lid then you have to take the cover off the inside of the boot lid and then you will have access to the light bulbs. If it's the brake light in the rear quarter panel then you open boot lid and unscrew the two bolts holding the light cluster and slide it backwards, then you will have access to the bulbs
Open the trunk, directly below the center brake light is the electrical plug and wire for the light. Depress the small tab on the plug that connects to the bulb in the center brake light. Pull the plug out of the connector. Next, release each of the two tabs on each side of the plug. Enter the back seat of the car and remove the brake light housing. Pop the trunk, behind where the brake lights are, there is probably a plastic/rubber cover with screws in it, remove it, and then there should be some screws holding the lens in place, remove those, pull the brake light lens from the outside of the car, twist the wires to undo them from the lens, and go from there.
There are two screws on the outside of the tail light assembly. Remove these two screws (keep them) and the assembly should be able to be removed from the truck. Carefully twist the socket out of the tail light assembly. Pull the old light bulb out of the socket and replace with new. Insert the tail light assembly into position in the truck bed and replace the two screws.
