Even with a quality replacement product, this is a very tough DIY job, especially for the inexperienced...and a bad result (doesn't work well, not water/air tight, short life, etc) is common. Best to have a upholstry/top shop do it.

There is no definite time that you need to replace a convertible top. If it is properly maintained then it can last for many years.
remove the screws on the inside fender well, take out the bolt in the top of the louvered panel, pull panel out slide battery out.

Changing the top on this (and all of what are the chassis 107 models, regardless of the engine number (280, 250, 380, 560, etc) assigned to that year is a straightforward process, like most all tops. This one is a particularly tricky fit and has some difficult parts to deal with. And it becomes increasingly more difficult with the less expensive replacement you buy. In other words, if you have to ask, you can't do it. The labor, without the replacement top itself is commonly $800-1200.
About $ 500.00 for the top and arround $ 200.00 for the head linear + Labor
On both sides of the rear panels are latches with arrows on them, they have to be released. They lock in position when the top is put down and the rear of the top on both sides is pushed down.
