Remove the screws and clips on the dashboard. tilt the lower steering column carefully an slide out the dash unit. You should be able to see a set of bulbs and the one for the odometer is at the center. Remove and replace with a new one.

You need a refridgerant recovery machine to remove any refrigerant. The evaporator is behind the dashboard, so the whole dashboard/center console needs to be removed. After replacing, using the a/c machine place the system in a vacuum to check for leaks and if ok, recharge/add pag oil.
remove radio, heater control, glove box, dashboard trim & bezels. once you do this you can see a tublar bar which the dashboard secured to. remove the dashboard and the heater core is there in the center

There are 2 bolts that are located right below the stereo in the dash. You can remove these bolts then you can pull out just that center section of the dash to get at the cigarette lighter and accessory plugs. Or at least that is how it is on my 2000 Ranger.
