On the 2.9 there is a bolt with a v shaped key at eh
base of the distributor shaft, this holds the thing in,
mark the #1 spark plug post on the distributor cap with a
permanent marker, a white grease pensil will mark the base of the
distributor post and engine block with a line to align it.
After removing Cap rotate the engine until the button points
towards position to spark #1 cylinder.
Look for timing marks on the crank pulley
note the position. Additionally you can pull the
#1 plug and feel for the top of the cylinder at
Top dead center TDC of the compression stroke.
You might rotate the crank a bit to feel the piston go up and down past TDC
(if things have gotton out of alignment this could be TDC of the exaust stroke
and the distributor is 180degrees will be out of time
if it is you will have to rotate the crank until the #1piston comes back TDC)
You can remove the distributor after marking and noting the
alignments. The TFI ignition module can be left on or not when
removing the distributor but be carefull as the heat treated plastic
breaks easily when old and that's $40 gone if you break that.
how do i replace a throttle cable on a 1988 ford ranger pickup
For a 1988 Ford Ranger , 2.9 liter V6 engine : 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE The engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 3 - 6 2 - 5 1 - 4 front of vehicle The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces towards the REAR
The 2.0 liter 4 cylinder , the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder , or the 2.9 liter V6
I believe the 2.9 liter V6 engine in a 1988 Ford Ranger is rated at : ( 140 horsepower )
For the ( 2.9 ) liter V6 engine in a 1988 Ford Ranger : The firing order is ( 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 ) The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces towards the REAR The engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 3 - 6 2 - 5 1 - 4 front of vehicle * the 2.8 liter V6 engine in , say a 1985 Ford Ranger , has the same firing order
10 degrees BTD
The distributor position will have to be set by turning the engine to TDC and then make sure that the rotor button is pointed to #1 on the distributor cap. This should be indicated by a 1 stamped on top of the cap. As for the firing order, it should be 1-3-4-2 but it will be stamped on the intake manifold for verification.
You can replace the speedometer cable, on your 1988 Ford Ranger, by loosening the cable nut on each end of the cable. The cable will come off and can then be replaced.
1-3-4-2
No , it has an Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS ) It has ( 2 ) coil packs because it has ( 2 sparkplugs per cylinder / a total of 8 sparkplugs on the 2.3 liter four cylinder engine in a 1993 Ford Ranger ) 1988 and older four cylinder Ford Rangers use a distributor and rotor and one sparkplug per engine cylinder
1 - 3 - 4 - 2 ( distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE )
no thanks, mine are fine.........but thanks for offering!!
