Front hubs my be wearing out.
i would like to know how hard is it to change the front hubs on a dodge truck?
If it has hubs, they can be replaced. I'm assuming that, by 'straight axle truck', you're referring to one which uses a solid front axle, rather than independent front suspension? Those use hubs, as well.
What year? if it's a 99-2010 4by4 you can't service the front hubs you need to replace the entire unit as a whole. Sorry.
To change front wheel bearings on a 1976 four-wheel drive GMC Sierra, you have to use the proper tools. Either by a mechanic or yourself; but you are required to know the basics. Being that these bearings are sealed and cannot be repacked with grease. It is important to replace the worn bearings, with the new ones. Before they damage the hubs.
You cannot rebuild the front hubs, you have to replace them. The inner hubs are sold as a complete unit, the bearings inside cannot be bought seperately. You will have to pull the inner axle shafts and replace the large seal (dealer part only) and the dust cover seal, you will also need the tool that beats the axle shaft back in and the seal on.
I worked in a Chevy dealer for 17 years, and have replace many front hubs on the Chevy trucks. The newer styles seemed to have poor quality hub bearings, even in the 8 lug HD configuration. In fact, I replaced many of the 8 lug hubs for bad bearings, and almost NO 6 lug light duty hubs. The 90's style hubs virtually never went bad if they weren't subjected to abuse.
On vehicles equipped with vacuum actuated hubs, a loss of vacuum will render them inoperable. On vehicles equipped with manual hubs, a broken or worn internal part will cause the same. Other areas to check include fuses, relays, wiring and other 4 wheel drive sensors and switches.
The 1997 Buick Park Avenue has front and rear sealed wheel/hub bearing units. Lower quality front and rear wheel hubs can price at 35-40$, while OE replacement units are around 117$. GM/AC Delco original equipment hubs are around 180-200 each wholesale. Labor to replace individual bolt-in hubs should be no more around 50-75 per wheel. Please note this vehicle has a total of 4 wheel hubs.
the truck has hubs. 4x4 front wheel bearings are not serviceable.
Hubs need turning on? Or maybe a fuse? If it is an automatic 4wd system (i.e. does not have manual hubs), you may need to replace the hubs. To diagnose this, jack up the front of the truck and place jack stands under both front axels so that the wheels are just off the ground. Then jack up the back of the truck so that all 4 wheels are suspended off the ground. Start the truck and put it into (forward) gear. the rear tires should be spinning. engage the 4wd system. Look underneath the truck. If the front drive shaft is spinning, but the front wheels are not turning, then you need to replace the hubs. I am told this is a pretty common problem with these trucks.
it might have to be pressed in with a machine call and ask people
