the filter is against the fire wall. loosen the clamp holding it in place... then, there are two clips holding the fuel line to the filter.. one on top and one on bottom.. these can be popped out with a flathead screwdriver.. it is then just pulled apart from the two pieces of fuel line..

It's more than likely that it needs a new fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition wires. While you are in there replace the air filter also.

I have a 1999 Ford Escort so I know this because I have replaced mine.The fuel filter is located on the center of the firewall in the engine compartment about half way down.The firewall is the part that seperates the engine compartment from the interior of the car.
