If you're doing the job yourself, and have all the necessary tools, the cost will be only that of the gasket and maybe some PermaSeal. You can check Autozone's website for the gasket price. If you're having it done at a shop, you're probably looking at several hundred dollars.FriPilot

Remove the old filter. Wipe the mounting surface clean. Apply a thin layer of oil to the gasket of the new filter. Install the new filter, tightening it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not tighten it more or less!!!!
I believe you want to drain the coolant, remove the top hose at the thermostat housing, remove the housing, replace the stat and gasket, reassemble fill with coolant and bleed the system.
the 2.2 engine of 1998 and up don't have PVCAnswerI recently replaced a valve cover gasket on a 98 sunfire, and was looking for the pcv valve. I could not find, even looking in a chilton manual. Eventually I called GM, and that is when I found out they are built in to the valve cover there is nothing to replace. The Elbow that comes out of the top of the valve cover hooks right into the air box. That is what I originally thought was the PVC.
Remove the thermostat housing screws and separate the housing, exsposing the thermostat and coolant, remove old thermostat and gasket. Reinstall new thermostat, gasket and coolant.

Between the intake manifold and the engine block; Dude, if you didn't already know that much about your car you shouldn't try to replace it by yourself. Get help.
I had the same problem with 2 cavaliers of mine ( which are basically the same as a sunfire) and my suggestion is the head gasket is bad or u have a cracked head most likely in between the valves.
2005 was the final model year for production of the Pontiac Sunfire. A failed or blown head gasket can result in lost compression, coolant contamination of the oil, and engine damage. A replacement head gasket set/kit can have a wholesale parts cost of 80$+ as of August 2014, plus at least 4 to 5 hours of labor, need to be factored in towards the price of a repair.
