i have a '96 Ford explr xl.... basically the same thing, i just put new headlights in (2-11-06)... it's pretty simple, twist the piece that plugs into the back of the headlight enclosure either 1/8 or 1/4 of a turn to the left (left loosey, righty tighty), don't touch the glass piece of the new bulbs with your bare hands, they'll explode when lit up if you do, the information to remove them is also in the manual and it has a few illustrations to help hope my babbling wasn't too confusing, good luck
you go in from the backside of the headlight assembly (under hood) it come out similar to the way we used to change tail light bulbs
where is the head light timer on 96 ford explorer
It is built into the headlight switch.
you have to unscrew bulb from back of headlight ( twist then pull out), then the bulb is replaced and do the exact opposite to replace. There may be a small clip you can use a flat head screwdriver to help with this. Hope this helps.
You have to replace the entire headlight assembly not just the cover.

Are you changing the headlight bulb, or the entire headlight assembly? Either way it would be much easier and time saving to go to your local autoparts store and pick up a HAYNES guide which has complete instructions and pictures.
