Open the hatch and prop it open with something. On the shock you will find a clamp that holds the small ball joint into the shock, some shocks will allow you to slide it away far enough to remove the shock. If you cannot slide the clamp, use a screwdriver to force it off. Careful where it goes as it will fly off. now do the other end of the shock.
Once you have it off, replace it with the new one. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to see which one needs replacing. You could get someone to open the hatch and move it up and down slowly. The good shock will give more resistance and you may be able to notice this as the hatch stops one movement and reverses (up,down).
Check answer for Ford Aerostar. All rear hatch shocks are similar. Some have a clamp that needs to be removed, some have a screw that releases the shock from the ball joint. Be sure to support the hatch while doing this or have someone hold it up.
Ford Expeditions don't have struds. they have shocks.

take the old ones off and put the new ones on
The shocks on a 2000 Ford Ranger are replaced by jacking the vehicle up, removing the wheels, unbolting the shock, and removing it from the vehicle. Because the vehicle is supported off the ground, the shocks are not under load and can readily be replaced.
remove the screw and pull the old one off push the new one on and reinstall the screw!
