There are a couple of reasons why a 1993 Mercury Villager is hard to shift. One reason could be a gear shift cable. Another reason could be low transmission fluid.

I'm not sure what "shift kit" you're referring to. If you mean the type used in performance applications to firm up shifting I'm not aware of such a thing even being made for the Villager.
You must remove the instrument cluster to do so.
If you're talking about the sensor for internal temperature it's in the dashboard next to where the shift lever is.
If it's in limp-in mode you need to take it to a transmission shop and have it diagnosed.
In my experience , my villager would not shift from park to anything. Found a T20 or T25 torx screw under dash by steering column to be really loose on shifter linkage. Works great now!
Not at this time. Replacing the battery and cables made mine shift more crisply. (battery voltage is critical for the computer to function properly)
