Wait until the engine is cool before attempting to change the thermostat. Remove the radiator cap to release any built up pressure in the system. Follow the top radiator hose to where it connects with the engine block. Remove the hose from the elbow. Now remove the 2 bolts holding the thermostat housing. Once the bolts are removed, remove the elbow from the connector. This may take a little prying. Once this is removed, you'll see the thermostat. Notice that the thermostat has the spring pointing downward toward the motor. If the thermostat has a rubber seal, you can carefully remove it and put it onto the new thermostat, place it back into position. If the rubber seal is cracked or broken, put on a gasket and gasket sealer to avoid leaks. If there is no rubber seal, you will need to place the thermostat in position, and then put on a gasket and gasket sealer. Bolt the elbow back on (this does not have to be cranked to death, just make sure it's tight). Reconnect the radiator hose. Put the radiator cap back on. Start the car and drive it, keeping an eye on the temperature to make sure everything is Ok.

Follow the upper radiator hose down to the engine. It attaches to the thermostat housing. Usually, two bolts hold the housing onto the engine. More than likely, you will have to remove accessories-alternator-etc. to gain access to the bolts.
On the 3.3L V6 it is under the radiator cap.
The fuel pump for a 96 ciera is in the tank.
1996 3.1 litre ThermostatThe thermostat on a 3.1 litre is located under the throttle body where it connects to the intake manifold. I found it was easier to remove the throttle body when replacing the thermostat. You first have to remove the throttle cable bracket that is mounted on the throttle body. After that you will be able to see the thermostat housing. The bottom hole on the thermostat housing is slotted so you don't have to completely have to remove it. Good luck!
