Water pumps on this engine, as far as I know, are internal. There is a water pump housing that looks like most conventional water pumps. The part you replace is inside the housing, an impeller more or less. Since the same housing is used it is common for owners to accuse mechanics of charging them for parts not replaced. Many mechanics thouroughly clean the housing in order to prevent this. If I remember correctly, remove the pump housing just as you normally would. I believe there are 3 bolts that hold the impeller in place. remove and install new. Hope it helps.

the water pump is Timing Chain driven behind the engine . Just follow the bottom coolant hose to the back of the engine and that's where u will find the thermostat housing as well. Remove the coolant from your 1997 Chevy Malibu radiator. Remove the bottom radiator hose. Run water through the top of the radiator allowing it to run out the bottom.
Let's drain the coolant, fill it with water, and find out!

In my own personal experience, very good. I have 185,600 miles on my '97 Malibu which I now have had for 12 years. Have not had to replace anything major. Just replaced the water pump (though in hindsight I do not think it was bad) and the alternator.
