to replace the bulbs above the rear number plate you will need a cross head screwdriver and possibly a small flat blade or a pick.

first open the boot until you can see the 2 lenses that contain the bulbs.

use the cross head screwdriver to undo both screws holding the lenses in place then you may need to use the flat screwdriver or pick to remove the lens and reveal the bulb.

hold the bulb and pull towards yourself.

replace with new bulb then offer the lens back into position and carefully screw the screws back in making sure that you do not over tighten them.

all done. less than 5 mins work.

To change a sidelight bulb, there is a sliding flap in the wheel arch that allows easy access to the rear of the bulbs. Slide up the flap to access and then twist the individual bulb assembly anti-clockwise to release (no cables to worry about as the connections are in the housing). Slide in the new bulb and replace with a clockwise turn. Don't forget to close the sliding cover. Done... Should take less than five minutes, for a relative novice. To change the headlamp bulbs is a little tougher. For the passenger side (UK), you need to remove a large plastic cover (just one twist screw - no tools). To remove the clip on the back of the headlamp cover is a pain and you just have to keep working at it with a screwdriver and/or pliers. Once removed, pull off the connector (remember the orientation), then squeeze and lift the retaining spring, and remove the bulb (H7 type, for both dipped and main beam). Remember the orientation of the bulb. When replacing with the new bulb, handle with care and do not touch the glass with bare hands or it will fail very prematurely. The reverse the above procedures, struggling to get the cover retaining clip back on. The driver's side is similar to the passenger side except, instead of removing the large plastic cover, there is a pull-up cover with a bulb image printed into the moulding, onve removed, you can get realively easy access to the bulb cover. The driver's side is easier and more accessible. The only tough part (on either side) is removing and replacing the black cover's retaining clip. There's probably a custom tool that VW workshops use, that would make it quite easy. The above were performed on a late 2004 UK model Sharan. Good luck

I just replaced both license plate light bulbs on my 1998 VW Jetta. I had to remove two Phillips head screws retaining the lens cover to expose the bulb. I then had to carefully use a pair of slip joint pliers, (housing access is too small to get your fingers in there), and grab the bulb with sandpaper to prevent slipping and then carefully without too much pressure to break the bulb, work it back and forth until it slips out of the friction fit socket. It is not a quarter turn socket. The all glass bulb merely slips in between a pair of spring steel tines to retain the bulb. It is fairly tough to get out. If necessary, you can remove the entire bulb housing, pry off the elbow socket fitting and pull the wire connecting tangs off the back side and then push the bulb out from the back if it breaks. Mine did not break but they were really in there and I could not remove them with my fingers alone.

I suppose you mean the led light above back window. I have managed to change mine today. (when vw service people willing to change for £70!!). There is not a bulb on this light. I've bought completely a new led light for about £25.

I use couple of screwdriver to pull out the light completely. It is quite hard to do it and few scratches appear around the light rim. If you have got better tools it might not happened. When light is out you'll see a cable attached to the light, you just pull the cable while pull the little thingy up (as if telephone socket). Then, replace the new light to push it firmly in its place until you hear click sound from it. Good luck.

The license plate light and connected right above the plate on a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle. To replace it just unscrew the old light and mount the new bulb.
