Drain the radiator. disconnect the top radiator hose from the engine. Remove the water inlet that the hose was hooked to. The thermostat is in the housing. Replace the gasket when replacing the thermostat.
Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator. It should connect to the water pump on the engine.

The fuel pump relay on a 1988 Dodge Dakota truck is located in the engine compartment, near the fire wall. It is contained in a water tight box which houses a number of relays and fuses.
The easiest way to remove a bypass hose on a Dodge is to cut it off with a sharp knife. The hose is cheap, I replace it with every water pump.

on top of the water pump. left to right looking at the engine ; alternator,water pump slightly lower, compresser ,your thermostat is on top the water pump between the alt. and compresser on top the water pump
It is driven by the timing belt. You have to dissassmble the right side of the engine to change it.
