Try unhooking the negative lead from the battery. Leave it off for 15 mintues, put the lead back on and start up your car. If it doesn't shut off you'll have to take it to a shop and have them plug it into their computer and shut it off. If it's a code they can just reset.

When my check engine light comes on, it is caused by the temperature sensor not working. As soon as the light comes on, my temperature drops to cool. If the light goes out, the temp gauge returns to normal.
