Pull the positive battery cable off for a few minutes. Or, hook up a scanner and clear the codes. The light will probably come back as there is an emmission problem most likely.

from what i have been told that you disconnect the battery terminals and then reconnect them. that should reset the computer
( No ) the 1997 Ford Explorer uses automatic transmissions that are ELECTRONICALLY controlled , where the 1992 model year is not ( P.S. I'm not a mechanic / technician )
