I'm assuming that you mean the check engine light?
Trying to figure out why it's on can be time consuming and costly.
EGR valve, cat converter can add up to big bucks.
The light in my car would come on then shut off after a few minutes, and would do this for weeks. Then nothing for weeks. It got so annoying that I simply took the light bulb out of the socket. I'm not suggesting that you do the same, but it solved my problem. I've owned my Toro for 16 years and know it inside and out, so for me that was the answer.
This depends 100% on what engine it is.

Go to a repair shop and have them diagnosis the problem. If you live at 2000 feet or more the check engine light will come on due to the oxogen amount at higher altitudes.
