the easiest way is take it to your local auto parts store. most places like AUTOZONE
or ADVANCE AUTO PARTS will Read them for FREE and give you the print out of the codes. now back in the day you used to be able to jump the pig tail with a paper click and count the times the lite flashed and that would be your code. but if the local auto parts places wont read them you struck buying a reader.

I'm certainly NOT a mechanic but .... since the trouble codes are stored in the vehicle's on-board computer I doubt that there IS any way to retrieve them without a device and a program that can "read" the car's computer.

1994 year and up need a code reader to retrieve their codes. Most auto parts stores offer this as a free service.
since 1995 to present, you have to retrieve codes by use of a obd2 scanner.
What you are looking for is the DLC or Data Link Connector which will require an OBD-II reader to retrieve codes from. The location of the DLC is on the driver's side under the dash.
Go to GOOGLE and type in GM code reader 1.6 - All the answers you require are in the file that will appear - You don't need a code reader just a jumper wire

HI If it's drivable take it to Auto Zone, they do it for free.
One of the sensors detected a fault that occurred at least 2x, but there are about 100 different ones. you need to retrieve codes from car's comp with a code reader
With an OBD II reader. Instructions come with the reader. Codes are standard.
