The "downs" have no meaning with regard to the scoring. When you spell a word, add up each letter's point value and add any extra points awarded, e.g. +20 pts, to give you a total point value for that word. If you use all seven letters, you also add another 60 points to your total. Also, a little trick: Look at the "average game" score for any given puzzle. Take the lower end of the average, cut it in half, and add it to the higher end of the average. This will always give you, within a few points, (sometimes exactly), the maximum score available for that puzzle. For example; today's average game score was "250-260". Half of the lower score,(250), is 125. 125 added to the higher score (260), is 385. The max score for this puzzle will be somewhere from 382 or so, to 390 or so. Hope this helps.
