In general, you look for differences in physical properties, like magnetism, solubity, density etc. Iron is a good candidate for magnetic separation. Salt (NaCl) is soluble - it dissolves in water (and can later be recrystallized by heating.) Lead remains when the other marterials are carried off. /Brian W

Put the rest in water

Put that through a strainer.

Salt will be in water

Lead and sand will be in the strainer

Figure out the rest yourself. I don't know!

The best way to separate a mixture of salt and iron filings without the use of a magnet is to add water. The salt will dissolve. Now the mixture is filtered leaving iron filings on the filter paper. The filtrate is now heated to evaporate water off leaving the solid salt.
