Connect timing light to #1 spark plug and battery
Remove and plug vacuum line to vacuum advance unit on distributor
Mark appropriate timing mark on crankshaft and stationary reference
Loosen distributor cap slightly
Start vehicle and aim timing light at timing marks
Rotate distributor to align marks
Tighten distributor cap when marks are aligned
Reconnect vacuum line

Look up a Cadillac maintenance book. Check location of ALDL terminal socket, make a jumper wire, jumper the listed terminals. Attach your timing light, and start your engine. You will be able to see, the markings on the crank shaft pulley, against the marks on the engine. Check your timing that is listed under the hood. You can adjust the timing by loosening the lock nut under the distributor special wrench needed. ALDL assembly line diagnostic link, usually located under dash. You can also check timing with a code reader with live data reading.
Under the rear passenger set. It is a sealed special battery that cost about $130+ and has a special vent to take fumes out of the cabin.

using a tach , idle adjustment on R/S of carb ( drivers side when standing in front of car ) adjust idle in PARK , A/C off
If the engine continues to run after you have turned the key off you have what was called "Dieseling". Checking the timing and set the idle to factory specs should cure it. Shutting the engine off while stopped in drive will stop the engine for now until you get it looked at.
what timing are you trying to set? the cam timing or the ignition timing?
