Actually 'set' the timing or advance/retard the timing?

Adjusting the timing is as simple as moving the distributor forward or reverse on its 'set' bolt, this is advancing or retarding the timing away/toward TDC (top dead center).

Setting timing involves a timing light and positioning the light against crankshaft markings through a viewing window located under the distrib.
