first what engine is it. if it is a 2.5 the ohc has a slot in it it line up on the rubber nipple that sticks up out of the valve cover at tdc(top dead center cyl 1). the marks on the distributer gear is another oval slot. this lines up with the dot on the front of the crank. The only problem is that to see this you have to remove all the pullys. the best way is to take off the tire and remove the plastic covers to get to your belt system. first what engine is it. if it is a 2.5 the ohc gear has a slot in it it line up on the rubber nipple that sticks up out of the valve cover at tdc(top dead center cyl 1). the marks on the distributer gear is another oval slot. this lines up with the dot on the front of the crank. The timing marks on a '97 Dodge Stratus are located on the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. They must be aligned to set the initial timing.
Timing is controlled by the PCM. There is no user adjustment.
I'm not sure if you can on that model. If it has a distributor, you can loosen the hold down bolt and turn it to advance or retard your timing. If it doesn't have a distributor, it set by the ecm.
It is set to 0 deg. with a scan tool. It can not be done with a timing light.
The timing on a 1997 Dodge Ram is not set with a timing light. The distributor rotor is lined up with the mark on the pick up plate when the engine is at tdc to set base timing. The timing is then fine tuned with a scan tool. The scan tool is used to set it exactly to 0 degrees.
