I suggest Omron HR-100C Heart Rate Monitor. This is the perfect HRM for anyone just trying to monitor their heart rate. Directions for set up are very easy. The price for this HRM is pretty cheap compared to others.
There are many Polar heart rate monitor models differing in the features that they offer. But typically a Polar monitor comes with a chest strap and a wrist watch. The chest strap is used to measure electrical activities of your heart. You put it around your chest. The wrist watch is used to display your heart rate. Usually within a short time, the watch detects the heart rate signal from the chest strap. You can set heart rate limits on your exercise, so you don't over or under exert yourself. You start the stop watch when you start exercising, and stop the stop watch when you are done. You then review your exercise data (e.g. average heart rate etc) on the wrist watch to see how you did. Depending on the model, it can get a lot more complicated than what I have just described but this is the basic way to use a Polar heart rate monitor.

The rate and pace of the heart are set by the SA node. There are backup systems in place if the SA node fails to do its job.

Some heart rate monitors come with a chest belt and a wrist watch, whereas some consist of only a wrist watch. Those with chest belts can monitor your heart rate continuously while you are wearing them, whereas those without a chest belt generally can't. The wrist watch is used to display your heart rate and for you to adjust various settings. A chest belt can communicate with the wrist watch with analogue or digital transmission. With an analogue transmitter, you can interface with gym equipment (treadmills etc). With a digital transmitter, you can't do that but you won't get interference from other heart rate monitor users nearby. Heart rate monitors vary a lot in features. At a minimum, it should allow you to set your target zone i.e. the lower and upper heart rate limits within which you will exercise. And if you exercise above your upper heart rate limit or below your lower heart rate limit, then it should beep to remind you to either ease up or work harder. For many exercisers wanting to lose weight, it may be a good idea to get a heart rate monitor with a calorie counter.

I believe that the Polar f60 is the best on the market. It easy to set up and has both, and has both visual and audible alarms let you know when youre out of your HR target zones.
The refresh rate and response time are set or changed by using the Display applet in the Control Panel.
