First pull the timer assembly out and turn the flywheel in a clockwise direction until the mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the outer flywheel housing. Then hold the timer assembly above where it sets and turn the housing where the wire connects; turn the housing until the wire stud is facing the center bend of the intake manifold, the bend coming out of the carb, then hold the housing in this position and turn the shaft till the high point of the shaft has opened the points set it into place. You'll have to get the oil pump shaft turned so it will fall into place as it sets. You will notice the timer shaft turn a quarter turn counter clockwise in place, it is timed. It usually takes me six tries.
They are set at .004 . Set with the timing mark is at 0 degrees and that cylinders valves are closed. Rotate 360 and set other side.

what timing are you trying to set? the cam timing or the ignition timing?

The timing should be set at 12 degrees before top dead center. If this is a Canadian heavy duty engine, it should be set at 2 degrees after top dead center.
start engine ,plug off vacuum line to advance on distributer ,set at 6-8 degrees btc with a timing light hooked on #1 cylinder,tighten dist. , hook vac. hose back up.done

You can not set the igitniton timing yourself.You can check it but not set it.The timing is ran off a crankshaft sensor.Idle timing is 27 degrees
