Alt+Ctrl+Del -> Processes, right click on the process which you want to close "End Process". P.S. Some programs, viruses are created in a way, when you cannot see it with standard software.

Why does it take a long time for your computer to turn off?
There are a lot of programs running in the backround which need to shut off properly before your computer can shut down. To see these programs, press Ctrl/Alt/Delete to get the Task Manager, click on programs running tab and you will see a list of all the programs running.

No not necessarily. What takes a computer so long to shut down is the fact that it has to close all the background programs as well as any that are running in the forground. Most people (me included) have a lot of background programs that need to be shut down before the computer will turn off.

If you have an application open, Alt+F4 will shut it down. If you do not have an application running, it will shut down the computer.
