I'm not sure if an expert would agree wiyh this. But when my dog broke her front leg, I supported the broken area with a flat piece of wood. Then I wrapped it up tightly a couple of times. Her leg healed within a month in a half. She is still running fine today.
2nd answer: having experience in a vet hospital I would suggest just holding down the dog down until you get to the vet if you can't do so the dog can support itself if you are on your own but you should always get professional help and not risk it healing in an improper way
our dog broke its leg and we can't afford to go to vet what can we do at home to help him?
Answer
Make some phone calls and see if there is a vet who will care for the dog at a lower cost. Certainly, if the dog has a compound fracture, you risk having the dog live with extreme pain and possibility of infection. Sadly, you will have a choices to make for the dog if you cannot afford the care.
You take the dog to a veterinary practice, and have them do it. There's no other responsible way around it.
Take the dog to a vet. If not your dog will suffer, and the bone will not heal correctly. Infection could set in and your dog could die.
take him to the local vet
jackhammer it in the face
If the dog's leg is actually broken, then there should be a cast on the leg instead of a splint. A broken bone on a dog can take as long to heal as a broken bone on a person, which is approximately six weeks. If you believe you dog's leg is broken, but haven't yet taken the dog to the vet, please do so immediately; a splint is simply not adequate to help the bone mend. If your dog already has a splint, then wait for the vet to remove it.
above the knee to below the ankle
Well, from my knowledge, they had a tool called a Leg Splint. It was a wooden thing that would attach to your leg. If you were in need of a leg splint, some would just chop off a tree branch and use that. Many infections and such things as the Leg Splint were what caused disease and other infections. I'm glad we have good medical services and ways to help our legs and NOT use Leg Splints.
try tying toothpick to the back of its leg and try to let it stay in one place
You would call that a splint.
It should but it will heal faster with one.
Rigid splint is used for stabilize body parts to solid the joints. Can be used for easing pain in wrist from Carpal Tunnel, stabilizing broken leg etc.
id try padding the top with cotton wool (balls or padding) to his leg and wrap some elastoplast around his leg (not tightly) just to hold it in place.
lame
No!
no way of telling w/o an exam. If the parts are still aligned a splint might be enough, but if the ends are pointing every which way surgery is often needed.
