I am going on the assumption that these steel posts are your upright posts. so we'll go from there. you need four tools: a post level, a line level, long piece of string or twine, and a tape measure. begin with the tape measure to lay out the square of your patio. after you have marked the aproximate location check the square of your marks by measuring from corner to corner diagonally. if your patio is rectangular or square than the measurements should be roughly the same. if one is substantially longer then move the placement of your post closer to the center on the longer sideand remeasure until it gets within a half inch or less. that is usually close enough that you wont be able to tell unless it's the size of a picture frame.
after your holes are dug (or your footers are placed) use the string and line level strung across the tops of the posts to get your posts level. If you are going to have a slight slope to allow for rain run off you want to make sure it runs AWAY from the house. Lastly use the post level to make sure your posts are plumb (level in the vertical) then begin to attach everything together, keeping an eye on the levels to make sure they stay level.
