Generally speaking, if you are burning oil, you are either having oil getting past the rings or the valve guides during the operation of the engine. Usually, to stop this, you have to remove the engine and tear down the top end. You will need to replace the rings on the pistons and a precision valve job would be a good idea. Normally. a little oil does get burnt but, its such a small amount that you never notice it in a normal engine. If an engine is blowing out blue smoke and fowling plugs??? Time to do the overhaul.
