Start by taking him or her out every half hour. Take treats with you and give them whenever the dog eliminates. If he or she goes inside, immediately take the dog outside until they go again. Do not hit the dog or rub his or her nose in it. This doesn't help and only scares the dog into never pooping again. If you take the puppy out often enough, he won't feel the urge to pee or poop inside. Also, getting a male dog neutered will kill his urge to mark his territory.

  • You should leave puppy pads in the crate
  • You can take him/her on a walk before you leave
  • You should feed the dog 30-40 min. before you leave so he/she digests
  • If the cause is seperation anxiety, leave the dog alone for about 10 min. and progress the time as time goes on
  • Get a smaller cage if cage is way too big (NOTE: Even if you think the cage is a good size, it might still be too big. Odds are it is too big.)

First off you need to make sure the crate is not too big. If you have a small dog or a puppy and you have them in a crate big enough for a full frown German Shepard to sleep in you need to get a smaller crate. Dogs will not poop in an area they know as their den. When its too big for them they will separate it into two areas. One to poop in the other to lay in.

Lure her out with a treat to an area where you want her to use the bathroom instead. Then, every day, train her by giving her treats. Don't be afraid to scold her when she uses the bathroom in her crate. You have to be firm, but gentle. Soon, she will get used to it.

There is a difference between a dog that pees in the house because he's not housetrained and a dog that pees in the house in order to mark things. Urine marking is NOT a housetraining issue. Even dogs that have been completely housetrained, or which have just relieved themselves outside can mark in the house with the right trigger. Dogs mark in the house for entirely different reasons that are not connected to simply relieving themselves.

Why do dogs scent mark in the house?:

Marking in the house can start in male dogs when they are about three months old, though it may appear in different dogs at different ages. It's also possible for some females dogs to mark in the house. Dogs have an extremely well-developed sense of smell and they leave urine sprinkles as a way to tell other dogs about themselves and to leave messages. Your dog usually does this outdoors by peeing against a tree or bush. This marks his territory. But he will also pee or sprinkle on something in the house in some cases. If you move into a new home, if you have a new baby in the house, if you are dating a new person, if you have a female dog in heat, or for other reasons, your dog may feel like he needs to make a display and reassert his position and he will do this by peeing on something. Some dogs will also mark territory when they are anxious or for other reasons, but most male dogs will scent mark in the home when they think they need to reassert their position for some reason.

Stopping the behavior:

There are some good ways to stop your dog from marking in the house:

1) Neutering your dog:

-Most dogs that scent mark are intact, meaning that they have their testicles. You can usually stop marking behavior by having your male dog neutered. This works for most male dogs. However, if the behavior has become a serious habit then having your dog neutered may not completely stop the behavior.

3) Watch your dog:

-Whether your dog is intact or neutered, if he is marking in the house you will need to watch him closely. If you can catch your dog in the act of lifting his leg on the furniture and marking, then you can scold him and let him no, in no uncertain terms, that this behavior is undesirable. But physical punishment is not the way to go. Scolding your dog is enough. Try taking him outside so he can mark in a more appropriate area.

-You can also use a shaker can when you catch your dog in the act of marking something. A shaker can is just a soda can that is half-filled with pennies or something else small and noisy. Cover the top with tape. When you see your dog lifting his leg, shake the can at your dog to startle him into stopping the undesired behavior. You can also use a shaker can to stop your dog from barking or for other undesirable behaviors.

Clean, clean, clean:

If your dog does manage to mark in the house, you must clean all traces of the urine in order to remove the scent. Even more than with housetraining, when your dog scent marks he is reacting to odors. If he smells a spot where he has urinated before, it can trigger him to mark in the house again.

Use a belly band:

If your dog continues to try to mark in the house, consider making him wear a belly band. A belly band fits around your dog's waist and stomach and covers his penis. You can place a sanitary napkin inside the belly band. This keeps your dog from peeing on things until you take him outside. Even if your dog lifts his leg on something, he won't be able to mark anything. Most dogs stop trying to mark things when they are wearing the belly band.

What is meant by a crate for the puppy?

A crate is a small container that you put your dog it. Putting puppies in crates allows you to keep them safe while you are out of the house. The puppy will bark and whine the fist couple of days, but soon they will get used to being in the crate. Buy a crate that is just large enough to fit your dog into, to prevent them going to the bathroom in the crate.

How do you train a puppy to pee and poop if it is cold outside?

To train a puppy to go to the bathroom outside in cold weather, keep your puppy on a regular schedule for going to the bathroom, dress your puppy in warm clothing when you take it outside, consider using a bathroom pad or litter box inside as a temporary measure, and use a consistent command to signal to your puppy that it is time to go to the bathroom. Gradually move the pad or litter box closer to the door and eventually outside, and be patient and consistent while your puppy is learning. If your puppy has an accident inside, clean it up thoroughly to remove the scent. It may take several weeks or even months for your puppy to be fully pee trained. You can keep the puppy from eating the cat food by putting the cat's food dish at a higher level. Cat have a natural tendency to jump up to higher levels to eat prey, so this will not disturb your cat at all. You can also feed the cat in a separate room from the puppy, such as the bathroom with the door closed, and return in 10 minutes to let the cat out and collect the dish.
