Sounds like your dimmer switch has a short in it. It may not be fading but gradually turning itself down while you are driving due to vibrations etc. It could also be a short in your electrical system but usually it is a bad dimmer switch.
i have the same thing with my 92 s-10 and everyone i talk to says replace the whole dash cluster,because the power supply is going bad.
