could be a few things, valves need adjustment or if it's a high mileage engine
use a heavier engine oil. maybe the engine requires higher octane gas.
have some experienced listen to the engine carefully to determine the cause.
That depends on what is ticking, and why. Generally, a minor engine tick that suddenly goes away was caused by a clog in the oil pathways inside the engine that cleared up suddenly. If the engine generally ticks until the engine is warmed up, this suggests a clog in the engine's internal oil pathways that stays there, but as the oil warms and thins it's able to squeeze through enough to stop the engine from ticking.
A 97 Maxima can have these symptoms because of a bad alternator. If the alternator has low output there can be a ticking and eventually the engine will stop running.
Take it to a mechanic
"Engine temp is low 140 degrees" Bad Thermostat (stuck open) "a ticking noise is coming from the upper part of the engine" Lifters Make a ticking noise, To stop that there are these bags that fill with oil. If you run low on oil the bags don't inflate at you get a clicking. Check you oil level!!! The bags could be bad, the oil supply could be clogged, or something else could be wrong.
Usually it's the lifters in the engine making that noise until they become fully pressurized with oil, then they stop ticking, like on the 3 liter caravans.
put clock oil on the second hand.
only way to stop lifters from ticking is to replace the lifter. ticking or noise from lifters is caused by parts being worn most times whenthis happens the nlobe on the cam that the worn lifter is on, is also worn,so you have to decide if it is worth paying for both to be replaced
The ticking noise is the metal cooling.
Think you are talking about 'pinking'. Check plug electrode gap is correct, check distributor advance/retard mechanism, reset/retard ignition timing
have your valves adjusted adjust your valves
Put more oil in if its not full already, other wise it will tick until the oil has fully gone through the system. Does it tick during idle or all the time? Other wise why are you just bothered about the idle time ticking? Especially if its only for a few mins.
No! ticking noise is usually lifter noise. your engine is fine.(to a point) try changing your oil put in a thicker oil to prevent metal to metal contact. go for a 15/40 20/50. let it run for a while(few miles), if it doesn't stop buy an additive called "engine lucas", that will dilute your oil just enough to allow it to lubricate your lifters. also when your oil level drops or your oil becomes dirty your lifters will make that ticking noise.(the one that increases with engine speed) a blown head gasket 99% of the time will cause your car to smoke either blue or white.
