As a person who suffered from depression derived from loss and grief, I would say that the best way to support them is by letting them know that whenever things get too heavy on the shoulders, you'll be there to ease them along the way, but try to not play too muh of an active role in telling them how they should get pass through the situation that they are going through with optimism, if you want to do so, then make it subtle, and no, you don't understand what they are going through, nobody does actually, but it truly helps to just be there for anything that they have to say, and let them know that you're there, call, text, email, meet up, anything, it'll help a lot.
