Other chains are stuck together using either the ordinary pins in the chain, or a special connecting pin. In that case it's simplest to use a dedicated tool called a chain breaker to get the chain off. If you're skilled and a bit desperate a hammer and a punch may be used. Of course if you're getting the chain off to discard it even an angle grinder or crude violence will do the trick. Break it sideways and it should open.
