It depends a bit on what you mean by 'take care of', but a commonly used word for this is welfare, welfare state. or disability.
The duties of a welfare officer in the church will vary from church to church. Their main duties are to just work with those in need of the church such as giving them food or money for utilities.
There are two that I can think of that are essential to the well being of the church. The first is a Clergies Conference, this is when the clergy responsible for certain areas where the church is located. They meet with the hierarchy of the church to discuss the welfare of the church. The second is a conference where the clergy and the lay members meet so that the lay members may receive instruction on religious matters. This instruction may be about loving ones neighbour or keeping the Sabbath Day holy. It may also include the sustaining of certain members to positions within the church.
The animal welfare is a group of people who take care of animals seize animals from people not taking care of it or checking markets to see if they are selling pets illegally. See the Related Links for more information about the Animal Welfare Act.
Charities which take care of animals, such as the WWF RSPCA SPCA etc
I'm not a spokesman for the Church, but I have been active in it for over 50 years. To answer your question, we do both. Two of the three main purposes of the Church answer your question: One is to "preach the gospel to the nations of the world and bring souls unto Christ." That's the missionary thing. Another one is to "perfect the saints." That's taking care of the members. We have some 50,000 missionaries around the world. Two of my kids are doing that. One just went to Panama, the other is in Anaheim, California working with Samoan people. The home teaching and visiting teaching programs of the church are set up to take care of the members. The Sunday School program, the primary program for kids, the welfare program for the poor, and many other facets of the Church are in place to assist the members and their families. Visit lds.org or mormon.org for more information. Good question! Hope I answered it to some degree.

The church members sing by echoing the words of Zeebo. There are no hymn books because they cannot afford them and few members can read. They take up offerings for community members such as Helen, who cannot find work and for her husband who has been accused of rape.
