I usually use a narrow bladed screwdriver like a chisel to dig it out. After you get it started, you can usually pull it out with pliers. It should only be about 3/8 of an inch thick.

In many cases, the lead can be melted out.

How do you remove the closet collar?

Not knowing your situation it's hard to answer. What type, cast iron, PVC, brass? Is it on wood over a basement or crawlspace or in concrete? Cast iron on wood over a basement or where you can get to it underneath. You can be gentle, peel out the lead and packing that is holding it in and remove it. You can break the collar and take it out in pieces. Might break the pipe under it if not careful. You can cut the pipe farther down the line and replace it with PVC with a rubber coupler between the PVC and the cast iron. If you just remove the collar, when you replace it, you can just use a repair ring that screwes to the floor. As long as the pipe is supported underneath the floor, the collar does not need to be attached to the pipe.

Changing iron waste pipe to PVC?

You just do it. Big help I know. There really isn't a question in your question. You cut the old pipe out and replace it. There is a chain cutter available that has a series of cutting wheels in a chain that you tighten down against the pipe and it basically breaks the cast iron pipe cleanly. Use a rubber coupler to connect the cast iron stub with the PVC. This is a short piece of rubber tube the right size to fit the pipe you are working with and is held on with 2 hose clamps. Where the cast goes into the floor or wall, you can take out the last section of cast and insert the PVC into the flare on the piece in the wall or floor and seal it as you would a piece of cast. Without a specific question, that's about all I can help you with.

How can you install all new pipe for a new toilet and new sewer line that goes to a four inch cast iron main line and connect the toilet properly with running water and pressure?

Please take note that is a difficult task and should be carried out by a qualified plumber only. Furthermore, connecting an existing water line to a new toilet is fine as all inlets are standard and will give adequate pressure. As far as the the outlet is concerned, depending whether it is a straight line or if it has bends to the cast iron pipe, the first way would be to connect PVC to cast iron fittings, failing that, replacing some cast iron pipe would be better, so connecting four inch PVC from the toilet to the next available joint of the cast iron. Making sure that the corking of the two pipes is done very well to prevent leaks.

Can you cut into cast iron soil pipe with plastic soil pipe?

You can put up to a 2 inch pipe into a 4 inch. If you are putting 4 inch to 4 inch, either take out a section of the cast and put the PVC in or cut out a section and connect the PVC to the cast with rubber sleeves meant for this. You can use a saddle clamp for the 2 inch. It is a half round piece of PVC with a 2 inch connection in it. It is held on with two U bolts that go around the cast pipe. Put it where you need it and mark the 2 inch hole on the cast. Drill a series of 1/8 inch holes around this circle. when you get them all drilled, you can break out the plug. Try to keep it from falling into the cast pipe. Put the saddle clamp on and connect the PVC pipe as needed. Seal the saddle clamp to the cast pipe with plumbers putty.

What is the difference between ductile iron and malleable iron?

Malleable cannot be broken like a cast fitting can be and normally malleable fittings / pipe do not have a seam +++ Its full name is Malleable CAST Iron - it is cast as "ordinary" cast-iron but is a lot less brittle. It is an important material combining some of the properties of cast-iron with those of mild-steel.

How do you replace cast iron flange?

You have to take the lead and packing out that is holding the flange in the next piece of pipe. If your flange is broke where the toilet bolts go, this is very common. There is a repair available for this. It consists of two curved pieces of metal that are about 1/3 of the circumference of the flange. They go under the flange and give you a new place to put the bolt. They are a lot easier to use than replacing the whole flange.
