well , lets see, it requires a Mitsubishi service manual (i recommend auto zone ,advance) cost 18.95. READ,READ,READ before you turn the first wrench.
it is not hard work, just lots of it. depending on the engine,2.4l,3.0. etc...
you basically have to take everthing off front of engine, thenCAREFULLY keep every pulley and tensioner in line while you swap the belt. Work is extensive,i just finished up 2.4l engine. interference engines have to be exact when you time them or you can bend valves, damage connecting rods and pistons. This is not your dad's Chevy 305 v8 where if you goofed and turned the engine over nothing happened, these engines it will happen and the damaged is extensive. So $ 358.00 at Mitsubishi is not so bad and while you are in there don't be cheap ... replace the water pump too.
Hello: I am doing a overhaul on my 2002 Mitsubishi Galant. I inadvertently moved the crankcase while trying to remove the small timing belt while the larger timing belt was off. Knowing that, I would like to know is there a procedure to follow to correct this?
A Galant has timing belts, normally the belts break if they have not been serviced. As for as jumping time they belt may stretch causing it to run bad or not to run at all. Pull the cover off of the timing belt and check the timing using the timing marks. If they are off your car is out of time.
Assuming you have the 2.5 engine, the water pump is driven off the timing belt.
NO.
you have to take the timing belt cover off and timing belt to get to the water pump
You have to take the accessory belt (serpentine) off, then take the left motor mount off while supporting the bottom of the engine. Take the timing cover off and then release the tensioner on the belt to take it off. You line up the timing marks at the crankshaft and the camshaft, put the belt on. Tighten the tensioner, then rotate the crankshaft on the engine at least 2 full turns, then check the timing marks to see if they are still lined up.
timing off, base timing not set, dist. not set in right position, timing belt about to break, low fuel pressure, burnt valves, leaking head gasket.need more symptoms.
If you suspect your timing belt has broken or the teeth have been stripped off of it, the only way to know for sure is to take off you timing belt cover and have a look. Some vehicles had / have interference heads. These vehicles will destroy their own valves if you try to crank them without a timing belt on.
take off the timing belt cover and see if your timing belt is not shredded
It is behind the timing belt coves and you will have to take the timing belt off to change the water pump out
Which belt? Fan belt or timing belt? Or is it the a/c belt? The timing belt is the hardest. Let me know and I'll be able to help you. Lee Duncan leehduncan@verizon.net
to take the harmonic balancer off, you shouldn't have to mess with the timing belt. but if there is no way around it, the easiest way is to get a marker and just putt a mark on the camshafts, and the crank so you can realine the belt. and just take the belt off.
