Just replaced my water pump on 1999 Jimmy. It's best to remove the fan if that's what you planning to do. leave the serpentine belt on for tension. Use an open end wrench or vise grips. lock onto the large nut which is in front of the pulley. it turns counter clockwise. you can put some hand pressure on the serpentine belt to reduce slippage of the fan pully as well. good luck I had to change a water pump on a 98 Jimmy and couldn't get the fan off. So, I removed the fan shroud and alternator. Then, I removed the pump with the fan still attached. I proceeded to nail the water pump to a light pole. Then, I had a buddy hold the belt pulley with a strap wrench while I used an adjustable wrench to break the nut loose. It was so tight that I would have never gotten it separated while in the vehicle.
