Try pushing the release button on the shifter. Put it in drive then back to park. Should work.

I need to replace the ignition switch on a 1998 KIA Sportage . Can this be done with a universal ignition switch ? There are 6 sets of wires going into the KIA switch. The universal switches come with 3 or 4 posts.

You will need to remove the retaining ring at the top of your 2003 Kia ignition cylinder. The ignition cylinder will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition cylinder.
Right down the center of the Kia is where the plus and ignition cylenders are. There are 2 ignitions. Remove the center panel right on top of the kia. Then remove the two ignitios in the holes below the cylenders you will find the plugs. Yoe will need an extension to get them out!

You have to remove the plastic cover on top of the engine and you will see 4 ignition coils with snap plugs on them, pull out on the little black tab and gently disconnect the snap plug. Remove the wires from the coil and the one bolt that holds the ignition coil down. Then just pull up on the ignition coil and the plugs are under them straight down the center of the engine..
Visit your local KIA dealer with proof of ownership and Identification. Most dealers can duplicate the original key or cut a key from code obtained from KIA.
The ignition coils only go over the #2 and #4 spark plugs
